G N Q-2 #2179
In 1914 GN ordered fifteen 4-8-2 Mountain types from Lima Locomotive Works of a conservative design that shared many of the dimensions of the O-1 Mikados. In 1928 Great Northern converted them into the 2-10-2 type and classed them as Q-2 numbers 2175-2189. The Q-2s retained the 63" driver size and 210 pounds boiler pressure but had a higher tractive effort of 76,250 pounds. After completion, they were assigned to drag service on the eastern prairies where they worked their entire careers, out lasting the more powerful Q-1s.
This Sunset model has lots of nice detail and the headlight drilled. The loco sports a custom paint job represents the many lines east divisions with a black roof with medium weathering. It's can motor and Sunset's belt drive results in a very quiet and smooth running model that is DCC friendly. Note there is no gearbox showing between the drivers and boiler. She suffered a cracked plasic gear on the driver that has been replaced. I bought this model new and it has had limited running time. Like its prototype, she's a real freight hog.
Original box and foam.
